Select Soccer
About Select Soccer

The Middletown Select Soccer Club is an MYSA
program for those players who have some ability
and who have the desire to play in a more
competitive league than our recreational S.A.Y.
league. The select program is the entry point for
Middletown area children, coaches and referees
to become part of the United States Soccer
Federation system; participate in local, regional
and national tournaments, participate in the
Olympic Development Program and take
advantage of the many training opportunities
offered by the Federation.

Team Formation

Select teams are organized by coaches and
parents who want to start a team for their
children. Players are selected by coaches based
on their knowledge of local players and from
open tryouts. New teams may join the Club by
making a written or verbal application to a
member of the Club Executive Committee. If the
Executive Committee agrees that the proposed
team fills a need the application will be approved.
If the club already has teams in the requested
age division the Executive Committee will only
approve the application if it feels the player pool
is large enough to support an additional team.

Teams are registered for an entire seasonal year
which runs from August 1 to July 31. They are
organized by sex and by the age of the oldest
player on August 1. U9 means that the oldest
player did not turn 9 years old until after 12:00
A.M. on August 1. The same rule applies for all
age divisions. No one may play who was not at
least 8 years old at the beginning of the seasonal
year.

Formation of teams and selection of players is
the responsibility of the coaches and parents. U9
and U10 teams play 8v8 on a small field and can
roster 14 players. U11-U18 teams play 11v11
and can roster up to 18. Recruiting players
rostered on another select team is not allowed.
However, players may seek another team or
attend open tryouts and transfer if offered a
place. The Middletown Club holds voluntary club
wide tryouts in July and November. Teams may
hold additional tryouts if they wish.

Teams can form before the spring season in the
same age division they would have registered in
the fall. However, they can only roster 3 players
who were rostered on another select team in the
fall; the balance of the team must be new
players. There is no restriction on the number of
recreational or indoor players who were not
rostered on a select team during the seasonal
year. Player costs vary widely but the basic cost,
without tournaments, for a new team is about
$80.00 Select coaches have more administrative
responsibilities than the S.A.Y. coach. It is
important to get help from other parents.

Coaches Training.

While no formal coaches training is required, the
Ohio South State Association offers an excellent
coaches training program throughout the year
and a coaches lecture series during the winter. It
is our experience that persons comfortable
coaching S.A.Y. soccer and willing to begin the
Ohio South training program make fine select
coaches. The Club may also be able to help the
team find a professional trainer if they want one.
Trainers usually charge $1,000 to $1,500 per
season.

Leagues

The Middletown Soccer Club is a member of the
Tri-County Youth Soccer Association. Tri-County
is made up of 19 clubs, mainly from Butler,
Warren and Hamilton counties. There are about
300 U9-U14 teams in the fall and 500 U9-U19
teams in the spring. Tri-Country is governed by a
Board of Directors composed of representatives
from each club. It is managed by an Executive
Committee elected by the Board of Directors. Tri
County is responsible for player and team
registration, organizing brackets, scheduling
games, tracking standings and awarding trophies.

Tri-County is a member league of the Ohio
South Youth Soccer Association, a member of
the United States Soccer Federation. Ohio South
is responsible for sanctioning tournaments and
for providing coaches and referee training.

The Middletown Select Club is an internal
component of the Middletown Youth Soccer
Association. It is managed by an Executive
Committee elected by team representatives. It is
responsible to the teams and the MYSA Board
for accepting teams, providing registration
material, maintaining soccer fields and assigning
home game referees.

Uniforms

The Middletown Soccer Club team uniform is the
XARA Wembley; white shirt with navy trim and
numerals, navy shorts with white trim and either
navy or white socks. The club provides white and
navy tee shirts which can be used as alternate
jerseys. The XARA uniform; jersey, shorts and
socks cost $50.00 and must be purchased from
The Field in Monroe. Alternate XARA uniforms,
warm-up suits, bags and other XARA equipment
is also available at our Club price.

Team Registration

The registration process begins about 14 weeks
before the beginning of each season when
coaches submit a Preliminary Registration Form
that identifies the team, age division, prior
season's team ranking and head coach. The
form and the $150.00 Club fee must be received
prior to the Tri-County preliminary registration
deadline (mid January for spring, mid July for fall).

Tri-County uses the information on the form to
establish preliminary brackets based on age and
ranking in the last season. There may be 2 to 6
brackets of increasing competitiveness for each
age group with 5- 10 teams in each bracket. New
teams will be assigned an identifying team
number and will be placed in the lowest bracket.
Bracketing is complete early in February for the
spring season and at the end of July for the fall
season.

Each team is responsible for the registration of
it's players who must complete an Ohio South
Youth Soccer application form, a player card and
submit a recent photograph and birth certificate.
Coaches must also complete an application
form, a coaches card, submit a recent
photograph and complete the team roster form.
Forms and cards are available from the Club
President. Cards are $12.00; forms are free.

Registration material must be assembled by the
coach and brought to the Middletown Soccer
Club registration meeting (late February for
spring, early August for fall). It will be reviewed
for completeness and correctness by the
Executive Committee. The Middletown Club
Representative will take the completed
registration material to the Tri-Country
registration meeting (early March, mid August)
where the cards and team rosters will be checked
and stamped if approved. The completed
registration material will be returned to coaches
at a final Middletown registration meeting (usually
the next week.)

Players and coaches rejected for incorrect or
incomplete registration material or who joined the
team after the registration deadline can be added
with a roster change form mailed (with all
registration material) directly to the Tri-Country
registrar. Allow two weeks for Tri-County to
process a roster change.

Schedules and Games

Games are scheduled by Tri-County. Depending
on the size of the bracket, teams will play 8, 9 or
10 games, half at Smith Park. All games will be
scheduled on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 to
6:00. The earliest Middletown games are at 1:00
and the latest are usually at 4:00. All away games
are in Butler, Warren or Hamilton counties.

Games may be rescheduled for inclement
weather or because one of the teams is
participating in a sanctioned tournament. The
home team is responsible for rescheduling the
game. The game can be rescheduled on any day
of the week when fields and referees are
available. Middletown teams must notify the
Middletown Referee Coordinator as soon as a
home game is canceled. They can only
reschedule games with her approval.

The winning team is responsible for reporting
game results to Tri-County. (The home team
reports if the game is a draw.) The duration of
games varies with age; U9 and U10 teams play a
25 minute half, U15 and above play a 40 minute
half. U12 and below use a number 4 ball.
Referees are paid by each coach at each game
(home and away). The fees vary with age from
$23.00 for U9-U12 to $31.00 for U17-U19.

Tournaments:

Most select teams play several tournaments in
addition to the regular season. Tournaments are
organized by individual Soccer Clubs who
establish the format and registration procedures.
The Ohio South State Association sanctions
local tournaments and maintains an extensive
database of local, regional and national
tournaments on it's Web Page. Team entry fees
vary from $350.00 to $475.00. Most
tournaments are 3 to 5 games.

The Middletown Select Club sponsors the Spring
Blast Tournament held in Smith Park at the end
of March.
